I’m a nature inspired, generative change consultant, facilitator and coach. I am also a writer, founder of Threads of Connection, an organisation development practitioner, gardener and whenever possible a frequent wanderer in wild and remote places.
Before embarking on a professional path, my early academic studies where framed within Eastern Philosophy, where I explored multiple ways of viewing the world and the nature of our reality. I was tutored by Ray Billington, who is regarded by many as an inspirational if unconventional philosopher. From our very first encounter Ray challenged my embryonic world view and urged me to think for myself. His mantra of, ‘question everything and trust your direct lived experience‘ has proven to be a real gift, not only in my work but also in appreciating more deeply the interconnecting fabric of life.
Much later in my career, these early threads of Eastern thought suddenly became very real and everyday. As I found myself having to make sense of vast cultural complexities and differences between Eastern and Western world views, which both directly and indirectly informed different approaches to organisational leadership and management development. It was a time when I was required to let go of much of what I had learnt and fully immerse myself in an unfamiliar system of thinking, doing and being. I recall that having to let go of my truths felt quite intimidating and very confusing at times.
But often it is our challenges that turn out to be real gifts in disguise. Looking back, I feel incredibly fortunate for having had that opportunity to experience a living and embodied organisational philosophy that was unique to that organisation. The whole experience enabled me to see how deeply embedded cultural patterns and rhythms serve as both frames for unity and cohesiveness, and control and destructiveness.
To explore my Organisation Development Practice I decided to returned to academia and participate in a leading edge MSc programme with the Metanoia Institute hosted by Jenny MacKewn and Simon Cavicchia. It was here that I found myself returning to the principles of humanistic philosophy and the value of experiencing an organisation as a living and continually evolving system of beginnings and endings. Enacted through complex patterns of relating which form and are informed through our actions of giving and receiving, and continual arriving and leaving.
I am now gradually re-organising my life, with the intention to focus on different ways to make pathways in which collaboratively I can enable enlivening developmental transformations to take place in ourselves and in the organisations , and communities where we choose to share our gifts. Within this narrative I am aware of a re-occurring thread which keeps bringing my attention back to understand the relationship of a self that co-exists within an expansive and creative ecology that is grounded in nature.
I have chosen to undertake this process of sharing some mini musings to enable an ongoing living inquiry that has germinated through me but is also part of an expanding collective narrative. Re-kindling the ancient fires that are quietly sleeping within our hearts and revealing to us the beauty and mystery which is contained within the multiplicity of life. Where we might come to realise that “we do not need to search for new landscapes, we simply need to see familiar landscapes with fresh eyes.”
